This is very real. This article is not crisis porn. We lost our house in the "Tubbs" fire of October 2018 that tore through Napa and Sonoma counties in California, as did thousands of others. Other fires ensued afterwards in the next few years.
The insurance for our condo unit, which we managed to buy around two years later, was already high at a few thousand dollars annually when we purchased in 2019. The next year the insurance more than tripled and the number of possible carriers dwindled to only one. We had to move out of California.
